Ashoka Chakra Brass Cuff

Curated by Trifed
Rs. 650
Product Details

The wheel at the centre of this cuff is the Ashoka Chakra, the twenty-four-spoke dharmachakra that sits at the heart of the Indian flag. It is cast in brass by the Dokra method, an ancient lost-wax technique worked by metal-casters in West Bengal. Each spoke is formed in wax before any metal flows, so the piece keeps the faint, handmade unevenness that machine stamping never has. The open band slips over the wrist, and worn plain, it speaks for itself.

The chakra does the talking, so let it. This is a cuff to wear on its own, on a bare wrist, where the cast wheel sits clean against skin or a rolled sleeve. Less is more here.

For everyday wear, it slips easily under a shirt cuff or over a plain kurta sleeve. Earthy, not glossy. The warm, matte brass of a Dokra casting reads earthy rather than shiny, so it suits handloom cotton, linen, and khadi far better than anything polished. Keep the other wrist bare or wear a watch there.

For festive or Republic Day and Independence Day dressing, the Ashoka Chakra carries its own weight. Pair it with white, ivory, or indigo, and let the wheel be the single point of interest. Skip competing bangles on the same arm.

Because the piece is gender-neutral, it works as easily with a saree or a jumpsuit as with a bandhgala or a plain tee, and since it carries meaning more than fashion, the styling around it stays deliberately understated. Meaning over trend.

A quick wearing note. The cuff sits low on the wrist and rolls on gently from the thumb side. Take it off before washing hands or swimming, wipe it dry after wear, and store it in a soft pouch.

This cuff is made by Dokra, one of India's oldest surviving metal crafts, worked here by casting families in West Bengal through the cluster My E-Haat partners with. Dokra is a lost-wax method, which means the piece you hold was never stamped or moulded twice. It was cast once, then freed from its shell. No two are alike.

The maker first shapes a core of clay in the rough form of the cuff. Over this, the whole design, the twenty-four spokes of the chakra and the band around them, is built up in fine threads of beeswax laid by hand. Every spoke you see was first a thread of wax.

The wax model is then coated in layer after layer of clay to make a mould, with small channels left open. When it is fired, the wax melts and runs out, leaving a hollow the exact shape of the design. The wax is gone.

Molten brass is poured into that hollow. Once it cools, the clay mould is broken away, and it can never be reused, so each casting is truly one of a kind. The chakra emerges rough at first.

Only now does it become jewellery. The caster then files and cleans the spokes, evens the rim, and smooths the inside of the band so it sits kindly on the wrist. The soft, matte, faintly uneven surface is the honest fingerprint of Dokra, not a flaw to be polished out.

What does the Ashoka Chakra on the cuff mean?
The Ashoka Chakra on the cuff is the twenty-four-spoke dharma wheel adopted into the Indian national flag in 1947. It stands for righteousness, motion, and the continuous turning of dharma. The design traces back to the Lion Capital of Ashoka at Sarnath.
What do the 24 spokes of the Ashoka Chakra represent?
The 24 spokes of the Ashoka Chakra are commonly read as twenty-four virtues, such as patience, courage, and kindness. There is no single fixed list, but the number signals a full, continuous cycle. On this cuff each spoke is cast individually in brass.
Is the Ashoka Chakra Buddhist or Hindu?
The Ashoka Chakra draws from the Dharmachakra, a wheel meaningful in both Buddhist and wider Indian dharmic thought. Emperor Ashoka, a patron of Buddhism, placed it on his pillars, and independent India adopted it on the flag in 1947. It is best understood as a shared cultural and national symbol.
What is Dokra brass casting?
Dokra is an ancient lost-wax metal-casting craft practised in West Bengal and other parts of eastern and central India. The design is first built in wax, then encased in clay and replaced by molten brass. Each Dokra piece is cast once and cannot be exactly repeated.
Is the Ashoka Chakra cuff handmade?
The Ashoka Chakra cuff is fully handmade using the Dokra lost-wax method, so no two pieces are identical. Small variations in the wheel and the surface are natural marks of hand-casting. They are the honest signature of the craft, not a defect.
Which hand should I wear the cuff on?
You can wear the cuff on either wrist, whichever feels comfortable. It sits low, just above the wrist bone, and rolls on gently from the thumb side. Many people keep it on the non-dominant hand.
Does the brass cuff need special care?
The brass cuff needs only simple care: keep it dry and wipe it with a soft cloth after wear. Remove it before washing hands, swimming, or applying lotion, since moisture dulls brass. A little tarnish is normal and can be gently polished back.
Will the Dokra cuff turn my skin green?
A Dokra cuff, being brass, can occasionally leave a faint mark where the copper in the alloy meets moisture. It is harmless and wipes away easily. Keeping the cuff dry limits it.
Is the Ashoka Chakra cuff a good gift?
The Ashoka Chakra cuff makes a meaningful gift, carrying a symbol of dharma and national heritage in a wearable form. It is handcast, gender-neutral, and easy to style. Add a note about the Dokra craft and the wheel's meaning.
