Banarasi weaving works metallic zari into silk, and the two threads behave nothing alike. Zari has almost no give, so every motif is a negotiation held across the width of the loom. The gold sits proud of the ground rather than lying flat, which is why it catches light at an angle rather than all at once.
A clear red drape carries sparse gold buti and a fine zari border. It is the restrained version of a festive red, built for occasions where the saree should not be the loudest thing in the room.
