Banarasi weaving works metallic zari into silk, and the two threads behave nothing alike. Zari has almost no give, so every motif is a negotiation held across the width of the loom. The gold sits proud of the ground rather than lying flat, which is why it catches light at an angle rather than all at once.
A crimson silk is covered in golden zari buti and finishes in a tasselled woven pallu. The butis are spaced to read from a distance, and the pallu carries the densest work.
